Rifugio Guglielmina (Mountain Hotel)

Guglielmina

This has been Europe’s highest hotel for a long time.  Owned and run by our good friend Alberto.  It was built by Alberto’s great grand father in the 1860’s and has remained in the family ever since.

It has played a major role in the mountaineering history of the Monte Rosa and amongst its many guests over the years was Queen Margherita.

Alberto personally renovated the building over a two year period into the fine place it is today and in 1994 opened it again offering rustic and cosy accommodation for up to 50 people in double rooms, furnished in the style of its period.

Alberto personally renovated the building over a two year period into the fine place it is today and in 1994 opened it again offering rustic and cosy accommodation for up to 50 people in double rooms, furnished in the style of its period.

Located on the Col d’Olen between Alagna and Gressoney  (it is marked as No2 on the piste map) it has amazing views over Val d’Olen and up towards the Monte Rosa.  Alberto has the phrase “strong impact” and for any serious mountain lover it certainly makes a strong impact on you.

Staying at the Guglielmina enables you to ski off piste first tracks from its door at 2,880 metres, having the mountain to yourself before the major lifts start working.  It gives direct access to the famous Val d’Olen powder bowl.

A night or two or even three here gives you a truly wonderful mountain experience.  Enjoy an evening meal with a glass of fine local wine and relax after a hard day’s skiing beside the wood burning stoves, soak up the traditional mountain atmosphere and enjoy Alberto’s warm hospitality.

Alberto also plays host to the annual Zuba Ski parties, Alberto, Fransesco and the rest of the team are excellent hosts.  It has a well stocked wine cellar containing over 9,000 bottles of wine, and a few glasses of Lemoncello always gets a good party off with a start!

History comes also with the hospitality, and a warm Bombardino is certain to give you a pick up.  Bombardino's are made from VOV (a drinkable Zabaione), cognac and cream!!!

Accommodation is available on both a half board and bed & breakfast basis with traditional home cooked regional cuisine and drinks available throughout the day.

The hotel is accessed on skis or by foot.
